I fractured my right foot Monday at an indoor inflatable place with Carter and Campbell . . . and Brandon is in Connecticut until tonight!
So the story goes . . . we were at Jump Its (an Indoor Inflatable Gym) with Leigh and Vivian along with Leigh’s parents who were in town for the week. I was helping Carter up an inflatable ladder (Campbell was hanging out with Leigh’s mom) to be able to go down the slide at the top. In the process, Carter slipped and I was behind him, therefore I slipped too and fell on my right foot. I probably fell 3-4 feet. So I sat with my foot on ice during the rest of the playdate because at the time we were hoping it was just going to be a severe bruise/sprain! After talking to a nurse at GE’s health coach line she determined that I needed to go to the closest Immediate Care center. Leigh’s dad drove me and the kids to Leigh’s house to drop off the kids so that he could take me to the Immediate Care Center while Leigh and her mom watched Carter and Campbell. At the care center they did x-rays and said I fractured my 5th metatarsal on my right foot (this is the bone that runs on the outside of the foot). They wrapped it in a splint and told me to see an Orthopedic doctor this week. Once finished there, he took me back to Leigh’s to get the kids, then Leigh drove me home in my car with the kids while her dad followed. Leigh got the kids down to nap, went home, got her car, brought yummy La Parrilla for dinner and then spent most of the evening here helping with the kids until they got in bed. My dad came from Birmingham Tuesday morning to help out with the kids and drive me around to doctors until Brandon gets home Friday night. I had to go to my primary care dr. Tuesday to get a referral to see the orthopedic dr. Wed.; not fun and I am still mad at the insurance about this one! My primary dr. said I have an "avulsion fracture" which means the tendon that holds or surrounds or whatever to the 5th metatarsal snapped/pulled loose and in doing so fractured the bone! He said because of that it may need to be "repaired;" nice word for surgery! We are supposed to be going to the beach in 3 weeks! Perfect timing! I keep telling myself that it could be so much worse and at least Carter wasn’t hurt! I am very thankful I was around people I knew, I don’t know what I would have done had I been there without extra hands!
Ortho update from Wednesday:
Unfortunately the update isn’t what I was hoping to hear! After seeing the orthopedic doctor it has been determined that I do have to have surgery; it is outpatient scheduled for next Wednesday at 7am. My choices were either this past Thursday or next Wednesday and I didn’t feel comfortable being put to sleep with Brandon out of town! After seeing the doctor and the x-rays he said not only is there a fracture but the bone that is fractured is turned! He will go in, turn the bone the correct way, insert a screw or screws in that bone and repair the tendon and possibly repair any other damage that he can’t see on an x-ray! In the meantime they put me in a removable cast and said that I can not put any weight whatsoever on my right foot for fear of moving or damaging something else! After the surgery, they will put on a splint that can not be removed until the stitches are taken out 2 weeks later; and again I will not be able to put any weight on my foot. Once the stitches are out they will do more x-rays to evaluate the healing and decide if I will be able to put a small amount of weight on my foot until totally healed and will either put another removable cast on, a fiberglass cast, or a splint!
All this from one of those jumpy things . . . don’t think I will be visiting those again! Fun times at our house. All this is going while Carter is suppose to start preschool in 3 weeks and I also still nurse Campbell so I will either have to stop, pump n dump, or really pray that I don't need heavy medication after the surgery!! Never a dull moment
